Instant hot-water supply heat-pump water heater using CO2 refrigerant for home use.

Author(s) : ENDOH K., KOUNO T., GOMMORI M., et al.

Summary

The authors developed a heat-pump water heater for home use that produces instant hot water using a CO2 refrigerant. The water heater has a high COP, and it saves space. They developed a heating system that supplies hot water at exactly the necessary temperature without additional cooling water being added, thereby creating a high-efficiency heat-pump cycle. A compressor and a heat exchanger to meet the requirements of a CO2 refrigerant have also been developed. Consequently, the rated COP of the developed heat-pump water heater was 4.6 at a heating capacity of 23 kW. By increasing the heating capacity, the authors were able to decrease the volume of the storage tank and combine the storage tank with a heat pump. As a result, the necessary setting area and the volume of the developed heat-pump water heater were half those of a hot-water storage heat-pump water heater, which consists of a heat pump and a large hot-water storage tank.
