Integration of district cooling and heating systems: the effects of nonlinearities.

Author(s) : ERIKSSON M., VAMLING L.

Summary

The cost and environmental impact of an integration of district cooling with district heating by heat pumps or absorption chillers depend on the consequences in the district heating system. Tools already developed and used for analysis of investments in district heating may be used also for the analysis of integration with district cooling. However, cooling technologies affect the performance of some technologies used in district heating in a nonlinear manner, which is difficult to clarify with tools used for analysis of district heating. In this study, results concerning carbon dioxide emission and cost consequences in the district heating system of integration of absorption chillers and heat pumps, accounting for performance effects, are compared to results obtained when assuming that the performance of district heating plants is not affected by the integration of cooling.
