Summary

LOW TEMPERATURES FOLLOWING BLOOM MAY HAVE RESULTED IN LOW FRUIT CALCIUM LEVELS AND POOR FRUIT AND VEGETATIVE GROWTH. FOLIAR APPLICATIONS OF NITROGEN TO STIMULATE GROWTH TOGETHER WITH LOW SOIL PH RESULTED IN EVEN LOWER FRUIT CALCIUM LEVELS. THE FRUIT CONTAINED BIG THIN-WALLED CELLS WHICH COULD NOT TOLERATE ANY STRESS CONDITION. BIG DAY AND NIGHT TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES PRIOR TO OR DURING PICKING AND POSSIBLY DEVIATIONS IN STORAGE TEMPERATURE SUPPLIED THE NECESSARY STRESS CONDITIONS FOR THE CELLS TO COLLAPSE.
