Summary

SMALL GAS ENGINES AND OPEN-TYPE COMPRESSORS WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY AND EXCELLENT DURABILITY WERE DEVELOPED IN THE THREE-YEAR PROJECT STARTED IN 1981 FOR 7 TYPES OF GAS-ENGINE HEAT PUMPS BY 3 GAS UTILITIES, 5 ENGINE MANUFACTURERS, AND 7 HEAT PUMP MANUFACTURERS. THE UTILITIES AND MANUFACTURERS CONTINUED DEVELOPING GAS-ENGINE HEAT PUMPS TO THE LEVEL OF COMMERCIALIZATION AND COMPLETED LARGE-SCALE FIELD TESTS WITH SUCCESSFUL RESULTS. ABOUT 2,300 GAS-ENGINE HEAT PUMPS (4.5 TO 17.5 KILOWATTS) WERE MARKETED BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1987 AND MARCH 1988.
