Summary

STATES THAT DURING 1989, 92 RANDOMLY-SELECTED FLIGHTS IN THE USA WERE MONITORED TO DETERMINE PREVAILING LEVELS OF ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO SMOKE AND OTHER POLLUTANTS IN THE AIRLINER CABIN ENVIRONMENT. FINDS THAT PARTICLE AND NICOTINE CONCENTRATIONS WERE HIGHEST IN THE SMOKING SECTION AND WERE SOMEWHAT HIGHER IN THE BOUNDARY REGION NEAR SMOKING THAN IN OTHER NO-SMOKING SECTIONS OR ON NO-SMOKING FLIGHTS. MEASURED CO2 LEVELS WERE FREQUENTLY ABOVE EXISTING COMFORT (ODOUR) CRITERIA. LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE, OZONE AND MICROBIAL AEROSOLS WERE GENERALLY QUITE LOW.
