Type of article: Article

Summary

As part of the effort to develop appropriate building materials in Nigeria, the paper examines and records the thermal properties of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) trunk in order to establish its suitability as a building material, from an energy conservation point of view. Results show that the thermal properties of Cocos nucifera compare favourably with those of wood. In fact, Cocos nucifera is a better heat insulator than most known wood resources. If the material is properly harnessed, it could be used as an efficient heat insulator in various interior spaces.
