Summary

THE KINETICS OF BREAKDOWN OF 2,3-DIPHOSPHOGLYCERATE (2,3-DPG) AND ACCUMULATION OF INORGANIC PHOSPHATE (P) HAS BEEN STUDIED IN HUMAN ERYTHROCYTES DURING INCUBATION WITHOUT GLUCOSE AT 310 K (37 DEG C) AFTER DIFFERENT STEPS OF CRYOPRESERVATION WITH 1,2-PROPANEDIOL. THE CONTENT OF 2,3-DPG WAS SHOWN TO INCREASE AFTER FREEZING TO 77 K (-196 DEG C) AND THAWING, AND TO DECREASE DURING INCUBATION WITHOUT GLUCOSE AT 310 K FASTER THAN IN INTACT CELLS. REMOVAL OF CRYOPROTECTANTS INCREASED THE RATE OF GROWING THE CONCENTRATION OF P AND DECREASING THE LEVEL OF 2,3-DPG.
