Summary

The metal hydride heat pump (MHHP) is one of the options for its great potential in recovery of low-grade heat. However, due to the low effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of metal hydrides (MH) particle bed, MHHP shows low performance. In order to enhance the activation characteristic of MHHP, Aluminium Foam (A.F.) sheet was utilized in this research. A.F. Sheet, with ultra-thin, three-dimensional net-like structure, small pore, and high porosity, was shaped as wafers and inserted into a metal-hydrogen reactor. The ETCs were experimentally determined and the effects of the parameters such as nominal pore size and the porosity were also investigated. Besides, the temperature histories with the proposed A.F. sheet were experimentally measured during the regeneration and cooling process to determine its influences on the heat and mass transfer. It was also noted that the A.F. sheet did accelerate the heat exchange, even in the reaction rate, in each process.
