Investigation on micro-hardness and magnetic entropy changes of Gd(1-x)Ni(x) alloys.
Author(s) : HUANG W. D., ZHONG X. C., ZHOU X., et al.
Summary
The magnetic entropy changes and micro-hardnesses of Gd(1-x)Ni(x) (x= 0-0.07) alloys prepared by arc melting were investigated. The structural analysis confirmed that a small amount of Ni can dissolve in Gd metal and form a Gd(1-x)Ni(x) solid solution. It was also found that the micro-hardness of pure Gd metal can be much improved by Ni doping. There is no significant difference in Curie temperatures for Gd(1-x)Ni(x) alloys compared with pure Gd. The magnetic entropy changes of Gd(1-x)Ni(x) alloys were not deteriorated by Ni doping and remained at a high level. The results, thus, indicate that Gd(1-x)Ni(x) alloys are more suitable for the application of room temperature magnetic refrigeration.
