Summary
In most cases, the linear compressor of Stirling-type pulse tube cryocooler (PTC)uses AC voltage in sine waveform to provide the compression and expansion of the working gas. However, theoretical analysis shows that the ideal cooling cycle of the Stirling-type PTC is similar to the cooling cycle of the Stirling cooler which includes one compression, one expansion and two adiabatic processes. The piston movement of the compressor should be discontinuous. But the actual movement of the piston is sinusoidal. Therefore, the investigation on the compressor’s driving voltage waveform which can provide the actual cycle more approximate to the ideal one is necessary. In this paper, theoretical investigation on the cooling cycle of the Stirling-type PTC has been made, and then a set of drive electronics which can provide different voltage waveforms has been developed. A new driving voltage waveform with horizontal line interpolated at the crest and the trough of the sine waveform (HLIS) is introduced. The driving voltage of sine waveform, trapezoid waveform and HLIS waveform have been tested on a typical coaxial Stirling-type PTC developed in the authors’ laboratory. Experimental results show that the cooling capacity at 80 K under the HLIS waveform driving voltage is better than that under the sine waveform. And the no-load temperatures under the HLIS waveform and trapezoid waveform are lower than that under the sine waveform. The no-load temperature and the cooling capacity at 80 K under the HLIS with 22 points at the peak is nearly the same as that under the HLIS with 28 points with the same input power.
