Summary

The biennial meeting of June 1999 in Rome of the Codex Alimentarius was another extremely important forum for deliberation of several issues affecting international trade in food. The Codex Alimentarius is the international food standards setting organization referenced by the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade Agreements of the Uruguay Round of GATT. Codex texts (standards, guidelines, recommendations) are considered an international benchmark by the World Trade Organization.
