Summary

STORAGE TRIALS IN VERY LOW OXYGEN CONCENTRATIONS (1.25%) ON COX'S ORANGE PIPPIN AND SCHONE VAN BOSKOOP CONFIRMED ENGLISH RESEARCH. THE FRUITS REMAINED GREENER, FIRMER AND HAD LESS CORE-FLUSH DURING LONG TERM STORAGE. IN CONTINUED RESEARCH ON THE VARIETY ELSTAR IT APPEARED THAT THIS VARIETY IS VERY SENSITIVE FOR C02 (SKIN DAMAGE) AND AT 274 K (1 DEG C) LOW TEMPERATURE BREAKDOWN OCCURRED. IN CONTRADICTION WITH ELSTAR THE VARIETY JONAGOLD REMAINED AT 274 K IN THE BEST CONDITION. HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF CO2 UP TILL 6% SEEM TO FAVOUR STORAGE TIME.
