Summary

35 years ago, the tragic Philadelphia epidemic erupted. It enabled Joseph McDade to identify Legionella pneumophila as responsible for a new kind of bacterial infection, Legionnaire's disease, in January 1977. Since then, the bacteria has remained in the limelight. Some epidemics have been etched into the memory of the public, e.g. that which struck Harnes in the Pas-de-Calais area in the North of France in winter 2003. This book offers a full overview of the topic, from the description of the 1976 epidemic, up until the prevention and control measures and modern means of monitoring epidemics.
In this new edition, various parts of the first edition have been revised and completely updated, and new chapters have been added, in particular those concerning genomics, immunity, intracellular multiplication of legionella, as well as those concerning strategies demonstrating sensitivity to antibiotics.
