Summary

The recent legionella epidemic in the Pas-de-Calais area of France has highlighted the need to tackle this significant public health problem. Cooling towers, although incriminated at the moment, are seldom subjected to control, and when they are, as is the case with the Noroxo factory suspected to be the source of the outbreak, the regulations are proving to be insufficient. If the professional stakeholders in the air-conditioning sector say they are in favour of better management of the maintenance of the towers, a new law currently being drafted will ensure, that all French equipment benefits from a follow-up obligation.
