Summary
Life cycle climate performance (LCCP) is used to evaluate the total climatic impact of a product by calculating the equivalent CO2 emission of the product life cycle during its manufacturing, usage, and disposal. Usually, the CO2 emission is maximum when the product is in use. However, leakage of refrigerants during the use and disposal of air conditioners has become a huge problem. The leakage ratio of refrigerants in packaged air conditioner was considered to be 0.9% per year, but recently it has been found that it may be as high as 3% per year. For multi-type air conditioners, the estimated leakage ratio has changed from 0.9 to 3.5%. Thus, not only annual performance factor (APF) but also the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants has to be considered during LCCP evaluation. In this report, LCCP evaluation is conducted for air conditioners using different refrigerants including R410A and a new refrigerant for GWP values of 1000, 500, and 4. The APF was determined from actual experiments or calculated following a method stipulated by JIS. The influence of the recovery rate was also evaluated by changing the recovery rate from 30 to 60%. The LCCP evaluation results reveal that the APF may decrease by about 25%, on using refrigerants with a GWP of 1000, when the refrigerant charge of the air conditioner is large.
