Summary
Refrigeration for distillation purposes on a natural gas field is normally provided by a propane vapour compression plant. Capital and running costs are high. Research in the USA indicated that sufficient cooling could be carried out using a lithium-bromide absorption chiller producing water at 3.3 deg C. This would remove enough condensable liquids to prevent problems in transmission pipelines. Tests were run using a standard 100-ton chiller powered by waste heat from the gas plant compressor engine jacket via a plate heat exchanger. The chiller was cost effective and proved capable of the continuous operation required in gas production. D.W.H.
