Michigan State University's apple maturity program: an extension tool to aid harvest and storage decisions.

Author(s) : BEAUDRY R.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The programme predicts apple harvest date, initially on the basis of flowering date and post-bloom temperatures and, at a later stage, on the basis of fruit analyses. Sampling intervals, analytical techniques, and the type of data collected are described. Amongst other benefits, the programme helps identify fruits suitable for short-, mid- and long-term controlled-atmosphere storage durations thereby maximizing quality retention.
