Microchannel heat exchangers: the solution to reduce refrigerant charge.

Author(s) : VESTERGAARD B., MADER G.

Summary

The solution to reduce refrigerant charge. Microchannel heat exchangers offer a practical solution to gain high capacity with a minimized refrigerant charge. On compact systems the refrigerant charge can be reduced by 30-70%. Microchannel technology has been used in the automotive industry since the late 1980s and is now the preferred solution for condensers in cars and used widely in car evaporators too. The motivators were compact design, low weight, long lifetime and the manufacturing process repeatability. The motivation for residential air conditioning and refrigeration is driven by competitiveness, high COP and low noise levels highly depending on the application. Today, microchannel technology is used by the big air conditioning manufacturers and starts to penetrate the refrigeration industry too. The research covers a comparison between microchannel heat exchangers and traditional fin and tube and tubeless steel designs on a number of key parameters.
