Modelling and analysis of the cooling system of an ammonia compressor.

Author(s) : BONJOUR J., CLAUSSE M.

Summary

A simplified model for a water-cooled ammonia compressor was developed. This model is based on a discretized description of the compression and heat transfer processes. The compressor is hence viewed as a heat exchanging device including a heat source. The model is used to highlight some features of cooling circuits. First, such a circuit cannot be designed using conventional heat exchanger theories, because the fluids temperature profiles usually cross-over each other, and because their shape is clearly different from usual heat exchangers temperature profiles: depending on the conditions, the coolant temperature exhibit a maximum or minimum along its path. An analysis of the cooling efficiency to various parameters is provided: the effect of co-current or counter flow on the discharge temperature, the effect of coolant mass flow rate, etc. will be particularly pointed out.
