Modelling and simulation of a hermetic reciprocating compressor.

Author(s) : PRODAN M. M.

Summary

Research activity in refrigeration has been generated by fear engendered by the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols, concerning ozone depleting substances and global warming. The article is centred on hermetic reciprocating compressors for household appliances. The global model of the machine is composed of several sub-models and a one degree of freedom valve motion has been implemented. The simulation computer code has an iterative structure. Input values are set for the refrigerant properties, boundary conditions and the geometrical data of the hermetic unit. The final outputs include refrigerant discharge temperature, heat, work and mass flow rates, compressor efficiencies and the behaviour of each characteristic parameter during the thermodynamic cycle. The compressor performances, for the different working fluids (CFC-12, HFC-134a and hydrocarbons), agree well with the technical data of the manufacturer. In order to illustrate the possibilities of the software developed, some representative charts are submitted.
