THE ARTICLE VIEWS THE SITUATION OF COLD STORES IN JAPAN FROM VARIOUS ANGLES AND PRESENTS A BRIEF HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENTS FROM AFTER THE 2ND WORLD WAR AND EACH TEN YEAR PERIOD UP TO 1983. BETWEEN 1943-52 IT WAS A TECHNICALLY BLANK PERIOD FOR COLD STORAGE: DURING 1953-62 NEW EQUIPMENT WAS INTRODUCED: FROM 1963-72 JAPANESE ECONOMY GREW AND DEVELOPMENTS AND IMPROVEMENTS WERE REALIZED: DURING 1973-82 THE OIL CRISIS ENFORCED EFFORTS TO SAVE ENERGY AND SEEK NEW ENERGY SOURCES: SINCE 1983 THE RATIONALIZATION OF FROZEN FOOD DISTRIBUTION HAS BEEN ACCELERATED IN SPITE OF SEVERE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS.
