Summary

Muskmelon fruits (Cucumis melo L, cv Durango) were individually wrapped in four types of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films. Two films were used for fruits packed in waxed fiberboard shipping boxes. Filled boxes were wrapped and sealed in one of the two films. Sodium chloride and potassium permanganate in the boxes reduced concentrations of water vapour and ethylene, respectively. Wrapped fruits were firmer and had less water loss and better quality than the control. A modified atmosphere packaging system consisting of LDPE film with thickness of about 75 micrometers and with appropriate permeability and amounts of sodium chloride and potassium permanganate, would be suitable for shipping muskmelon fruits from Mexico to distant markets.
