Modulated reversible heat pump systems to deliver enhanced cooling and heating.
Author(s) : WANG S., MAJUMDAR A.
Summary
In commercial buildings, approximately 60% of the energy is consumed by the air-conditioning system. Given the worldwide crisis of energy availability and rising costs and the need to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, it is imperative to look at technologies that can help to reduce the energy consumption of buildings. Inverter technology and the Copeland digital scroll are two leading technologies available in the market that can provide variable capacity in an A/C system thus improving part load performance. This paper describes the need of having variable capacity and the mechanical principle of the digital scroll technology. This paper also enumerates energy saving advantages with this technology and some experiences of manufacturers around the world. Enhanced vapour injection technology on a scroll platform allows heat pumps to operate reliably at low ambient and also provides additional heat in the most energy efficient method. This paper explains how the enhanced vapour injection technology works, its performance in an air-conditioning system and the application flexibility. It also discusses some of the technical considerations needed to design and optimize this technology in a heat pump system.
