Molecular sieve desiccants for HFC refrigerants.

Summary

Blends of hydrofluorocarbons, many of which contain R32 as an important constituent, have rapidly become accepted as alternatives for R22 and R502 throughout the air conditioning and refrigeration industries. The small molecular size of R32 in comparison to R22 and the halogenated ethanes raises the issue of compatibility with zeolite molecular sieve desiccants both in terms of the effects that R32 penetration may have on desiccant performance and on the chemical reactivity of the system. The paper describes both chemical compatibility and desiccant performance studies of molecular sieve desiccants with a range of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants with R12 and R22 as reference, both in the presence and absence of the appropriate lubricant.
