More and better packaging: a solution to world food waste.
Author(s) : ROBSON N. C.
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
The author reminds that back in 1977, FAO carried out a survey of postharvest crop losses in developing countries. The survey produced convincing evidence of postharvest waste. The average losses of durables, the category least susceptible to damage, ranged from 10 to 26%. One report recorded 50% losses arising from insect damage to food grains. The figures for fruit and vegetables varied enormously between types of produce, as expected, but ranged from 18 to 33%. For roots and tubers, the range was 12 to 26%.
