More than 25 years of ground source heat pumps in Germany.

Author(s) : SANNER B.

Summary

Around 1970 the first ground source heat pumps (GSHP) have been installed in Germany. Horizontal collectors and groundwater wells did prevail, and in the early 80's the vertical earth probe gained territory. The major field of problems was and is system integration. The performance of a heat pump depends upon heat source and heat distribution system. Mistakes in this area can have a much higher impact than poor engineering in the heat pump factory. The market structure with a number of different parties, such as plumbers, electricians, drillers etc., is an obstacle to a holistic approach. A committee on GSHP-standards within the VDI (German Association of Engineers) works to develop guide-lines for avoiding the mistakes of the past and to give GSHP a good future based upon the lessons learned.
