NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS LINE-HEAT-SOURCE GUARDED HOT PLATE FOR THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF THICK THERMAL INSULATION MATERIALS.

Author(s) : POWELL F. J.

Summary

THE USE OF THICK INSULATING MATERIALS REQUIRED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A UNIT FOR THE ABSOLUTE MEASUREMENT OF THICK SPECIMENS THAT MAY BE USED FOR CALIBRATION. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THEGUARDED HOT PLATE APPARATUS OBTAINED. THE ALUMINIUM HOT PLATE HAS A DIAMETER OF 1 M. IT CONTAINS ELECTRIC HEATERS IN SERIES. IT MAY BE ROTATED FOR MEASUREMENTS, VERTICALLY OR HORIZONTALLY, OF A PAIR OF SPECIMENS UP TO 380 MM THICK. THE HOT PLATE CAN BE CONTROLLED BETWEEN 253 AND 423 K (-20 AND 150 DEG C), AND THE OPERATING RANGE OF THE COLD PLATES IS 233 TO 373 K (-40 TO 100 DEG C). THE APPARATUS CAN MEASURE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITIES OF 0.02 TO 0.30 W/MILLIK.
