Natural or synthetic refrigerants: Does the lubricant care?

Summary

Lubricant and refrigerant interaction is an important aspect of HVACR technology based on combinations of refrigerant and lubricant being considered. Even with synthetic refrigerants, changes in lubricant chemistry are needed when moving, for instance, from chlorinated to fully fluorinated refrigerant and similarly when moving to fluoro-olefin products. The same approach is needed for developing lubricants for natural refrigerants since they can vary significantly in their comparative chemistry, which will influence certain interactions. Natural refrigerants like carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and ammonia are strengthening in use and acceptability due to various environmental factors, and therefore, it is important to understand lubricant options to enhance performance. Today’s HVAC&R market is focused on refrigerant environmental impact and decarbonization all while preserving current standards of operation and advancing operation to more severe conditions. This ultimately places challenges on stability and maintaining various other properties, such as viscosity, to provide the needed bearing protection within a compressor.
