Natural selection: the struggle for survival in the competitive world of refrigeration equipment.

Author(s) : PEARSON S. F.

Summary

The world of refrigeration has been shattered by the twin discoveries of ozone depletion and global warming. This has led to a mass extinction of refrigerants which were very satisfactory in many respects apart from the environmental impact. Sudden change of direction away from chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants has led to a period of unprecedented development and speculation concerning both refrigerants and methods of refrigeration. The paper relates many aspects of the refrigeration industry: history, thermodynamic cycles, compression, absorption, evolution of components, refrigerants, trends.
