Natural working fluids: military advantages and opportunities.

Author(s) : PATIL A. S.

Summary

Equipment includes more and more cooling devices, which must be compact, light, very resistant, non detectable and must resist to biological, chemical and nuclear hazards. As one of the natural refrigerants, CO2 is receiving strong consideration for military applications due to its high volumetric capacity and the elimination of recovery and recycling equipment and procedures. The Army strategy is to develop a prototype within three years with specific design and performance goals. The US military is uniquely positioned to support new, challenging research to develop CO2 on the basis of life cycle costs rather than initial acquisition cost alone.
