Summary

Puts forward three criteria for the comprehensive assessment of a metal hydride heat pump: the actual COP, the alloy output and temperature output. States that the calculated results from these criteria, with a heat-upgrading heat pump as an example, show that the prerequisites for an improvement of system performance are lightweight reactor vessels, better metal hydrides with wide and flat plateaux and small hystereses in their P-C-T curves and measures to recover sensible heat between reactors and to enhance heat and mass transfer in the reactors. Notes the need for further research to enhance their performance.
