Summary

The impending phase-out of the CFCs most commonly used in the refrigeration industry, due to environmental problems, implies significant changes in the design of refrigerating equipment and in related technologies. These changes will have an important impact on the economic activity of this sector. The future is even more doubtful and, as a consequence, industrialists will have to face more difficulties when establishing long-term planning. In this situation, the possible solutions regarding refrigeration equipment are examined, notably for compressors, when CFCs are replaced by other fluids which are already available on the market.
