Summary

PROPER AIR CIRCULATION WITHIN THE LOAD IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS IN THE TRANSPORT OF FRESH PERISHABLE FOODSTUFFS. BASED ON AN EXTENSIVE RESEARCH PROGRAMME PERFORMED BY THE ITALIAN STATE RAILWAYS, THE AUTHOR STATES THAT IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO HAVE A LOAD STRUCTURE OF NATURAL POROSITY, BUT IT IS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE AIR PASSAGES BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES AND ENSURE BOTH VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL AIR FLOW. EXPERIMENTS HAVE ALSO PROVED THAT CONVENTIONAL AIR CIRCULATION (DISCHARGE AT CEILING LEVEL AND RETURN ALONG THE FLOOR) IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST SOLUTION. E. F.
