New use of ammonia in heat pumps.

Nouvelle utilisation de l'ammoniac en pompe à chaleur.

Author(s) : HIVET B., DUCRUET C.

Summary

On the basis of simple thermodynamic and regulatory criteria, ammonia and HFC-134a appear to be the only fluids that can be used in heat pumps. Ammonia is especially effective at high condensing temperatures. Nevertheless, its use has only been possible for a short time, thanks to industrial refrigerating compressors with a maximum service pressure of 4 megapascals. Test results have confirmed its excellent performances. A comparison with HFC-134a shows that ammonia has equal or better COPs, and at much higher volumetric capacities. Two applications in the agro-food industry are presented.
