Summary

A series of experiments on the dynamic performance of the heat pump water heater (HPWH) unit with electronic expansion valve (EEV) under different environmental conditions were conducted. The dynamic heating capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) of the HPWH unit under different EEV openings were measured. The effects of the EEV opening on the performance of the HPWH unit were analyzed. Meanwhile, the dynamic performance of the HPWH with EEV was simulated and the results were compared with the experimental onc. The experimental results indicate that during the heating process a maximum COP exists for a fixed EEV opening. For different EEV openings, the COP and heating capacity of the system using larger EEV opening are superior to those using the smaller one in the initial heating stage. While in the late stage, the system performance using smaller EEV opening is better. It is found that the system performance is improved significantly by changing the EEV opening in the di fferent heating period and the average COP of the HPWH system is increased by 7.6%. The simulation result is in good agreement with the experimental one, which indicate that the mathematical models and calculation method are feasible.
