Summary

ATTEMPTS MADE BY THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION ON FOOD IRRADIATION WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY (GUIDELINES) WERE COUNTERED BY A REPORT FROM THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION OF THE ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC HEALTH AND CONSUMER PROTECTION WHICH QUESTIONS THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF IRRADIATED FOOD PRODUCTS. THE NUMEROUS EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS NOW AVAILABLE SHOW THAT THIS OPINION IS NOT ADMISSIBLE. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT THE ARGUMENTS AGAINST IRRADIATION ARE NOT JUSTIFIED.
