Summary

In absorption chillers and heat pumps, LiBr is the most common material used to absorb water sorbate. Machines based on water/LiBr are characterized by crystallization challenges at low evaporator and/or high absorber temperatures. These working fluid-related thermodynamic limits to operating temperature are referred to as the operational solubility limits. To expand or overcome the operating limits, numerous additives and alternatives to LiBr have been evaluated. This work summarizes the operational limits for those materials that have sufficient data available to determine their operational solubility limits. Compared with pure LiBr, it is
shown that some pairs expand the thermodynamic limits, while some exacerbate the solubility challenge.
