Optimal intermediate pressure of vapor compression cycles with vapor-injection using a scroll compressor with vapor-injection and a two-stage reciprocating compressor.

Summary

The intermediate pressure is a critical factor in vapor compression cycles with vapor-injection. In the literature, some correlations have been found in order to estimate the optimal intermediate pressure. Nevertheless, some of these correlations consider the compressor efficiencies as a constant or ideal. On the other hand, the vapor-injection technic can be performed in two ways, injecting refrigerant directly into the compressor (vapor-injection compressors) and injecting refrigerant between two stages of compression (two-stage compression). This paper presents a comparison of the optimal intermediate pressure of vapor compression cycles with vapor-injection using a scroll compressor with vapor-injection (SCVI) and a two-stage reciprocating compressor (TSRC). The comparison was performed in terms of the COP and the discharge temperature. A general model of the cycle was implemented in EES. Semi-empirical models of the compressors were included in the model of the cycle. Results show the influence of the compressor technology on the cycle performance and the differences in the optimal intermediate pressure and the discharge temperature for both compressor technologies.
