Comparison of the theoretical performance of a scroll compressor with vapor-injection and a two-stage reciprocating compressor.

Summary

This paper presents a comparison of the theoretical performance of a scroll compressor with vapor-injection (SCVI) and a two-stage reciprocating compressor (TSRC) working in several operating conditions. The comparison was performed in terms of the compressor efficiencies, COP, capacity, power consumption and discharge temperature. Semi-empirical models were implemented for each kind of compressors. The models consider the main sources of losses in the compression process and are able to predict the compressor and volumetric efficiencies in terms of ten empirical parameters, which have a direct physical interpretation. The model validations were performed using experimental data of a scroll compressor with vapor-injection and a reciprocating compressor, both working with propane. The two compressors were tested in a calorimetric test bench in a wide range of operating conditions. The considered cycle is a two-stage cycle with an economizer. Results show differences in the compressor performances depending on the pressure ratio. The physical origin of the observed differences has been analyzed in terms of the implemented model.
