Optimizing the effectiveness of R744 microchannel evaporators.

Author(s) : KULKARNI T., BULLARD C. W.

Summary

Uniform distribution of the two-phase refrigerant is the key to maximizing the capacity of microchannel evaporators. The high operating pressure of CO2 refrigerant requires use of many flat multiport tubes in both the evaporator and gas cooler. The effects of refrigerant quality maldistribution are quantified and means to counter it are explored. Liquid-only feed, with flash gas bypass, is then investigated in more detail. Performance is compared for passive vapour bypass devices, demonstrating successful elimination of quality maldistribution by their use, with no significant impact on the system performance.
