Summary

THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN THE USA HAS RELEASED A NEW STUDY OF THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE LAYER WHICH INDICATES A POSSIBLE DEPLETION OF THE OZONE LAYER OF ONLY 2 TO 4 PERCENT BY THE END OF THE 21ST CENTURY COMPARED TO THE 15 TO 18 PERCENT PREDICTED IN 1977. THE IMPROVED ESTIMATE IS FROM A NEW MATHEMATICAL MODEL WHICH INVOLVES A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY. D.W.H.
