Summary

A REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE IS GIVEN ON THE LATEST RESEARCH INTO THE EFFECTS OF CHLORO-AND FLUORO-HYDROCARBONS ON THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE LAYER. THE EARLIER INFERENCE THAT CFC COMPOUNDS CAUSE A SUBSTANTIAL ATTENUATION OF THE OZONE LAYER, DID NOT PROVE TO BE TRUE. AN ANALYSIS HAS BEEN WORKED OUT AND A REGISTRATION NETWORK WAS DEVELOPED FOR MEASURING WITH RELIABLE ACCURACY THE CHANGES IN THE THICKNESS OF THE OZONE LAYER PROTECTING THE EARTH TO INDICATE, IN TIME, IF A DANGEROUS DEPLETION IS TAKING PLACE. MEASUREMENTS, HOWEVER, SHOW THAT, SO FAR, THERE IS NO REDUCTION OF THE OZONE LAYER BUT ON THE CONTRARY, A SLOW INCREASE HAS BEEN REGISTERED.
