Summary

FOR DECADES FLUOROHYDROCARBONS USED IN REFRIGERATING MACHINES HAVE BEEN PREFERRED REFRIGERANTS. THEY ARE EQUALLY USED AS EXPANDING AGENTS IN THE AEROSOL AND POLYURETHANNE FOAM INDUSTRIES AND HAVE INCREASINGLY GAINED IN IMPORTANCE. IN RECENT YEARS SOME CONSIDERATIONS HAVE APPEARED IN LITERATURE ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF REFRIGERANTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT (BIOSPHERE), ESPECIALLY ON THE EARTH'S OZONE BELT. A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT IS GIVEN ON CURRENT KNOWLEDGE IN THIS FIELD.
