Summary

Marsh and Star Ruby grapefruits, Navel oranges, clementines and Nova hybrid mandarins were sourced from commercial packhouse runs and packed as if for export. The fruits were subjected to various temperature regimes which varied for each cultivar depending on accepted commercial practices. All treatments included simulation of cold sterilization at -0.5 deg C for 12 or 22 days followed by different storage temperatures and a final store shelf simulation of one week at 20 deg C. Rind water content, total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and fluorescence parameters were measured at the start or treatment and at each storage temperature change. Results are given suggesting that fruits should remain in cold storage for as long as possible before being placed on the shelf.
