Passive precooling of vegetables by using nocturnal radiative cooling under different covering materials.

Author(s) : KOWATA H., GOTOH M., OKUYAMA T., et al.

Summary

Cabbage and lettuce were simulated by spherical blackbody models containing water, and placed inside a tent, which was pitched in the open field. Tarpaulin sheets and polyethylene films colored black, white, or silver were used to make tents. The model was also exposed to the open atmosphere without any enclosure. Environmental data were measured continuously inside the tent throughout the night. An analysis of these data showed a relationship between the covering materials and the power of nocturnal radiative cooling.
