Performance analysis of a plate type heat exchanger used as absorber in a combined compression/absorption heat pump.

Summary

The Institute for Energy Technology in Norway is currently performing a research programme on a combined compression and absorption type heat pump using ammonia/water as working fluid. A 60 kW experimental heat pump has been built for high-temperature industrial applications, and is designed with plate type heat exchangers for the absorber and desorber units. The compressor is a two-stage reciprocating unit. The absorber and desorber units each consist of two plate type heat exchangers mounted in series to increase the thermal length and to support the distribution of the working fluid mixture. The first absorber is a bubble absorber and the second is a falling film absorber. The desorber units are both falling film devices. The main objective of this paper was to study the performance of the absorber units.
