Performance analysis of a solar photovoltaic operated domestic refrigerator.

Number: pap. ID: 898

Author(s) : CHIKOUCHE A., ABBAD B., LAIDI M., et al.

Summary

This paper describes the experimentation stages of converting a 160 L domestic electric refrigerator (ENIEM) to a solar powered one. A conventional domestic refrigerator was chosen for this purpose and was redesigned by adding a DC DANFOSS compressor, battery bank and powered by solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels. Various performance tests were carried out to study the performance of the system. Simulations regarding economic feasibility of the system for the climatic conditions of Bousmail-Tipaza (Algeria) were also carried out using RETScreen International in order to size the authors' system . Such units have applications for the storage of vaccines and life saving medicines which require uninterrupted refrigeration, in medical shops, rural health centers, veterinary laboratories, etc.
