Summary

A water chiller with an open reciprocating compressor has been used to camparatively assess the performance of HFC-134a with reference to CFC-12 under as close to identical conditions as possible. Performance characteristics of the chiller under retrofit conditions show that HFC-134a offers better cooling load and COP vis-à-vis CFC-12 for identical operating conditions. Further heat transfer analysis of data for the condenser shows that the condensing heat transfer coefficients for HFC-134a are superior to CFC-12.
