Summary
Gas generated by heat intrusion into a storage tank of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied hydrogen (LH2) is called boil-off gas (BOG). BOG can be treated by using BOG reliquefaction technology. Conventionally, cryogenic refrigerators, such as the Gifford-McMahon (GM) refrigerator, have been used for BOG reliquefaction. The magnetic refrigeration technique applied in this study is a refrigeration system using a heat pump cycle called an active magnetic regenerator (AMR) (Barclay et al., 1981). It has a higher theoretical efficiency than those of conventional cryogenic refrigeration systems and has the potential to reduce the energy input for reliquefaction. In this study, a BOG liquefaction system is constructed using a magnetic refrigeration technique, and its performance is investigated. Consequently, the influence of various conditions on the performance of the liquefaction system is clarified.
