Summary

New refrigerants operating with a simple cycle are analysed for a wide-range critical temperatures. Considering performance, GWP (global warming potential) and flammability, R32, R452B (R32/R1234yf/R125, 67%/26%/7%) and R447B (R32/R1234zeE/R125, 68%/24%/8%) are selected for compressor performance evaluation of R410A alternatives. R32 is a single component refrigerant with excellent cycle COP (coefficient of performance) and volumetric capacity. R452B and R447B are non-azeotropic mixtures with glide from 1 to 4K, which makes refrigeration system modelling complex. Of air-cooled chiller/heat pump conditions A/B/C/D, compressor drop-in performance are compared of constant dew-point and mid-point evaporating and condensing temperatures. Mid-point condition test results show that, at condition A for R410A, R32, R452B and R447B, capacity/R410A are 100%, 106.1%, 93.3% and 86.0%, volumetric efficiency are 0.971, 0.942, 0.949, and 0.933, and power efficiency are 0.745, 0.728, 0.722, and 0.721. At condition D, discharge line temperatures are separately 93.9oC, 123.1oC, 104.2oC and 110.1oC for R410A, R32, R452B and R447B. At constant dew-point conditions, R452B and R447B show smaller capacity, and no evident power efficiency change. R410A-designed compressor shows the need to optimize efficiencies for low-GWP alternatives.
